Very rare bus (Right hand drive Westfalia) / Built in Germany on 05 January 1973 / Left Factory for England on 25 January 1973
Current Owner since 28 April 2012
New MOT just completed (although it is exempt!) - 01/05/2024 with a full oil change service done at the same time - Mileage History over past five years only 2658 miles!
Lovingly looked after van since the day it came home with me over 11 years ago, no expense has been spared and I have spent thousands making sure it’s in tip top condition for camping and many international road trips. But, with a heavy heart, it’s time for it to go to a new home to get the use it truly deserves. It is a real head turner and gets a lot of attention, be that at a show, or just parked up at the supermarket.
In my ownership I have replaced almost every part, bolt and nut, so it is good to go for another 50 years at least!
Some of the major work carried out includes…
- New engine (Just Kampers Vege 1641) and clutch kit fitted at 70780 miles in June 2015
- Front and Rear Spax Shock Absorbers fitted February 2017
- Heater system cables and ductwork refurbished in February 2017
- Body works carried out include new front bumper and tidying up of rear window frames and leisure battery tray in March 2017
- Cab cabling and fuse box renewal carried out in March 2018
- Stainless Steel hinges and latches fitted to the elevating roof in April 2019
- New Sterring rack in April 2024
- New rocker gasket in April 2024
It has just been MOT'd and fully serviced, but before this, the last service and subsequent restorative work was carried out by VW Camper Company, a specialist in Banbury in February 2022, and the van has only covered 779 miles since (Mileage at service 80,966, current Mileage 81745) and I settled the bill to the tune of £2,984. This included:
- New Exhaust Tail Pipe
- Rear Wheel Cylinder and Bearings
- Fuel Pipe
- Interior Door Cards
- Handles
- Window Operating Gear
- Wiper Motor
- Brake Lights
- Oil Change
- Fan Belt Rocker Cover Gasket
- Spark Plugs
- Oil / Fuel Filter
This is just one example of the very high bills paid over the years, some in excess of £5k, as I said, no expense has been spared. All receipts available.
Other bits that come with it as part of the sale:
- New Curtains and windscreen cover fitted April 2022.
- Thule Roof Bars (Specialist for the Westfalia pop top roof)
- Royal Traveller Drive Away Awning
- Bus Shelter Sun Awning
- Fiamma Carry Bike Rack (2 x bikes)
- All maintenance and repairs documentation available from 2012 to date.
- Original factory ‘birth certificate’ available.
- Two sets of keys.
This is not (quite) a concours van, but it is extremely solid, very honest and runs like a charm. Due to the level of maintenance and care over the years it is very reliable and will provide hours of fun and freedom for the right owner. Owning a classic car is of course a labour of love, and it is not without some imperfections (character!) but it’s impossible not to fall for it over and again when you sit in it and turn the key.
