We’re pleased to offer this 1960 German-built 15-window Volkswagen Split Screen for sale.
Original German-produced models are among the rarer Split variants. This pre-1964 Hardtop Deluxe Bus, identical in trim and features to the 23-window Deluxe Bus, but without the eight roof windows and sunroof, represents an exceptionally rare discovery. The M-Code 130 denotes a Deluxe model without a sunroof and roof windows.
This Split Screen began its life in America, and since its import from the UK in 2008, it has been cherished by one owner upon its arrival. It immediately underwent welding work on the inner and outer sills, outriggers, jacking points, and rear corners, seamlessly blended with Sealing Wax Red paint to ensure a solid body. The bodywork of this vehicle remains robust, showing no signs of corrosion except for a small spot on the lower front panel which is visible in the pictures. Only minor surface rust is present, which contributes to its distinguished patina appearance with original beige grey over sealing wax red paintwork and has been preserved with lacquer.
Beneath the original patina paintwork lies a rock-solid chassis. Additionally, this Split Screen has undergone moderate lowering modifications, including a two-inch steering box raise, straight axle conversion at the rear, and dropped spindles at the front, paired with a 5.5” narrowed beam. It proudly sits on a set of chrome Fuchs wheels, featuring a CSP front brake caliper and disc conversion, while up top, it boasts a rare original HWE roof rack.
Moving inside, the interior has been converted into a day camper, featuring a rear rock ‘n’ roll bench and a custom-built cabinet against the bulkhead. All seats and door panels have been reupholstered in light brown and cream leather. The flooring in the back is wooden, with bespoke carpets for the front and rear. The front includes a Petri steering wheel, a USB/MP3 stereo, and two JBL GT5-500C speakers. The headliner is custom-made with Beano-inspired Dennis the Menace comic-themed fabric, along with blinds for all the rear windows, matching cushions, and even one for the dog.
The engine is an original 1,500cc single port motor with a matching original gearbox. Having recently come out of storage, we have recently replaced all the fuel lines with 100% ethanol resistant fuel lines.
